Reflect ion is a good t eacher for direct ion. The slide show t hat has been running all morning should serve as a reminder of t he posit ive moment um we are developing as a Chamber. And while we have minimal opport unit y t o push back t he wave of economic downt urn we have been feeling since 2008, we do have t he fort it ude t o st and t all and say Biddeford-Saco is open for business and do everyt hing we can t o provide consumers, bot h resident s and visit ors, wit h t he very best experiences. Biddeford-Saco is York Count y ’s economic heart . We must pump posit ive informat ion out t hrough t he art eries of our connect ions at the press, our elect ed officials, advert ising and promot ion for t ourism and ret ail and be a st eadfast part ner wit h our t hriving manufact uring sect or. The Chamber st ands fast in it s readiness and abilit y t o do all t hese t hings.
While I’m proud of t he changes and t he great work we accomplished last year, I t hink it is more import ant t o look ahead. Down-t urning economics and lower t han accept able public percept ion has t aken it s t oll on our membership. We must change t his course. I believe t hat collect ively Biddeford-Saco and t he surrounding communit ies, in which we have members, must come t oget her and change t he conversat ions, change t he negat ive percept ions and make membership in t he Chamber heart felt . I want you t o be proud t o be a Chamber member. I want you t o be able t o speak of t he ways we enhance your business and our communit y like it were dinner t able conversat ion.
In 2012, The Chamber will enhance it s role as a convener. We have several learning sessions and workshops planned t o help inform our members and t he public on issues of great import ance. We will cont inue t o bring you access t o elect ed officials, candidat es for public office and issues of import ance in our communit y. Just yest erday, I met wit h Governor LePage and was able t o speak posit ively of our area and your businesses. We are cont inuously evaluat ing ourselves. We look for every opport unit y, be it our new enhanced websit e or a mobile app, an advert ising program in t he newspaper or t he Buy Local campaign, t o highlight our members. In 2012, we will focus more on member t o member benefit s and ensuring t hat you are get t ing opt imum value for your dues. We will part icipat e in event s t hat will bring consumers t o our area like t he Travel Show t hat Christ ie Prat t and I recent ly at t ended in Philadelphia . We will part icipat e in local and st at e government t o ensure t hat your businesses are recognized and heard as a voice of reason and economic securit y t hroughout t his region.
All I seek in return is your support. If you believe we are doing everything we can to be your trade association of choice, I ask you to recruit one business.
If everyone recruit s one business t o join our membership, we will gain the strength and recognit ion t his region deserves.
At 800 members, which is still 4-500 businesses belowt he pot ent ial membership of t his area-we would rank in t he t op 5 Chambers in t he st at e.
Membership is one measurement of success. I assure you, t he Chamber st aff, Board and volunt eers will be working t irelessly t o earn ot her measurement s such as effect iveness, polit ical recognit ion and most import ant ly int egrit y.
It hank you for everyt hing you do in our communit y.
Thank you for at t ending t oday and may you all reap prosperit y in 2012 and beyond.
If everyone recrui
